擬革紙は、和紙を動物の革に似せて加工する、江戸時代から伝わる三重県の伝統工芸です。かつては煙草入れや壁紙として重宝され、海外へも輸出されるほどの一大産業でした。
北椿では、擬革紙の技法をベースに、さらに独自のアレンジを加えた作品を製作しています。
海外において擬革紙は、「イミテーション・レザー・ペーパー」、つまりは、「偽物の革」と紹介されることが多く、事情により本物の革が使用できないケースでの代替品であると考える人もいます。ですが私たちは、世界的にも問題となっている、絶滅が危惧される野生動物の乱獲に対して、「偽物の革」である擬革紙が、本物の革の代替品ではなく、むしろ、もっと積極的に使用していくべき希望の素材であると考えます。
これからも、多種多様なアーティスト達と共に、誠実で、正直なものづくりに取り組んでいきたいと思います。
Gikakushi is a traditional craft from Mie Prefecture, Japan, dating back to the Edo period. It involves transforming washi paper to resemble animal leather technique once so valued that it gave rise to a thriving industry, with products like tobacco pouches and wallpaper exported overseas for their beauty and durability. At Kitatsubaki, we build upon this heritage, adding our own quiet innovations to create works that are both rooted and reimagined.
Outside Japan, Gikakushi is often introduced as “imitation leather paper” substitute for genuine leather when circumstances demand alternatives. But we believe this material is more than a stand-in. In a world where the overhunting of endangered species remains a global concern, Gikakushi offers not imitation, but intention—a hopeful material that invites us to choose compassion over convention.
We will continue to create with integrity, alongside artists of diverse backgrounds, crafting pieces that reflect not only tradition, but truth.
